UGGGGGHHHH!

BIG BUMMER.   No cycling (Period)  Doctors orders.  Until every thing clears up.  Turn out that scratch throat is viral pharyngitis. :( :(    It keeping me up at night with all the hacking and coughing.  Bleh.      So yeah this could last another week.  And the fricken weather is so darn nice and I'm seeing people cycle all around me.  Ahhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!   Sigh.

So yeah no more riding in the rain.   Because this whole mess started on the 17th and has snow balled.  :(   My throat was fine and dandy until the end of that ride.  So I've been sick for 11 days now.  And yes I did ride 62 miles and yes that felt wonderful, but at the time I was not taking any medication.

Waiting for the storm to clear.  I hope it clears fast.

CHICO VELO WILDFLOWER 2017

I'm so excited and I can not hide it.   I signed up for the Flat Flower 60.   Which will more be like the 62.  I only live 2 miles from the starting line so driving their is kind of pointless.

Well I'm not out of the woods yet.   Still hacking and coughing and going back in for another check up, something else is going on and I'm having a very hard time breathing at night, maybe it's part of it, maybe it isn't, but dang it hurts.   Oh and to top every thing off I had a filling fall out.  Bleh... it was fixed yesterday.

I have to wait 3 more day to ride.    It's been so nice and clear out side I'm going stir crazy.   But like I said being on a bike and not breathing well does not work.

Dreaming of cycling.

12 miles Airen with Hubby

Hubby got the riding bug today, he just had to ride.   And it was not raining, it was drizzling on and off, so he was like I can deal with that.  But we did suit up in rain gear and gloves.   The first half of the ride was fine, until it started to really rain. LOL :D  He was like shit.  6 miles to go and we both got drenched, big time.  And it was slow going, I couldn't see a thing and wiping my glasses did little to help.  And then 2 miles from home the wind picked up and the joy of riding into very strong wind let's say 20 mph and we were heading right into it.  Going home was a pain in the Bleep. Well at least it was 2 miles and not further.

I been like a ant on a sugar cube with my bike.   As soon as I get home I gently wash away all of the mud and grime.    Then I whip out my tooth brush and go to work on all the hard places to get.  I have a bit of diluted degreaser to get rid of any hard greasy areas that do pop up.  Rinse it off really good and dry it off.

And I also lean something the hard way.  No turning the bike up side down when I break. Yes it looks bad ass, but it's not smart.  I got a tear in the handle bar.  :(   Noticed it when I was cleaning the bike.

I swear I must be the dreaded BUG Murder?  When I clean the bottom of the bike, their are really fat ant's and other insects plastered to the bottom of the bike.    Oh yeah I forgot to mention yesterday I had a big bug splatter on my teeth.  Yuck.

Break day tomorrow.

50 miles Airen FEELING GREAT!

Yay! Boy were the weather people were wrong.  Today was a awesome day for a bike ride.  And on top of every thing I managed to get 4 hill reps in.  Which at the end of the ride, I could really feel it.   I'm so use to my Pain Cave that on the first ride up the hill I put the Airen into a hard gear.  Opps, yeah talk about not fun.   Low gear....Low gear!  Not higher.   So the second time around I fix the goof.   Sadly pain cave has been sitting, I took it out and it's getting worse.  It's like peddling through mud.  So Pain cave need to see a Bike Dr.

Hey You Cam.  The pictures are blurry, but it works.

12.00 miles Airen & RAIN

Today's Weather.
Precipitation 100%
Rain, becoming heavy; watch for flooding.
This ride was a little bit more tolerable, the rain was warm and it was not cold.   If had been really cold and windy uh uh.

Could some one please explain to my why 3 days off the bike feels like 3 weeks???  My legs were on fire. My hubby looked out the window and said your nut's if you do.  Yes I'm nuts and guess what I did.  I geared up in a blue rain coat I have that has a hood which I gave up on, because the wind kept blowing it back.
Yes.  It was terribly hard to see where I was going because my glasses were very wet and when I stopped they would fog up and yes I didn't manage to hit a lot more pot holes than I would normally and lastly YES! My head, legs and shoes got drenched.    But all in all my legs felt better after the ride.  Like I said before riding in the rain has it's up and down.   All in all today was a good day for going for a swim on the bike. :)

Their is something special about riding in the rain though the park, it's very still and you only hear the sound of rain, no barking dog, no screaming children, no people noises.   I really forces you to focus on the moment of the ride.   Thought the whole ride I only encountered one other cyclist, two runners, a couple walking their dogs, quail and a super soaked squirrel running for cover.

Life is about doing uncomfortable things.   And for me riding in the rain is uncomfortable as it gets, because is literally soaks my sense, I can't see very well, I can't hear very well, because of the rain coat and I can't look behind me very well, so I have to be extra alert and then their the slipperiness of the road, so you have to be extra careful.

But yet I will still say it was a awesome ride.   At one point I found my self laughing, because of how soaked my exercise pants and shoes were.  But so what!

It's going to rain for the next week straight, oh joy.   I don't know if it's good to have wet shoes for a week straight. LOL    But hopefully the weather is off as they usually are and I'll be riding in overcast days and not swimming.  ;)

12.1 mile AIREN

How could I resist hubby wanted to ride today.  So we both geared up and did a 12.1 mile ride.  Again great weather for riding.  The tree's are starting to bloom....spring?   Not quite there is one particular little flower that blooms when spring is spring, no little white flowers yet.  ;)

I can't believe.  My hubby dropped me and dropped me bad.  LOL  He roasted and toasted me.   We raced at the end of the ride and I could only get up to 24.8 miles an hour and Mr Speedy Cookie Monster best me by going 25.6.   Nothing feel worst than getting dropped by the Cookie Monster.  LOL

41.1 miles Airen. Feeling Good.

Can't find my cord, so I can't down load pictures off my camera. :(

Was not expecting to do 41.1 miles, but it just happened.  It was a super nice today.   I guess my leg were really missing riding.

A huge tree was washed down stream and lodged it self in the water and along side were the benches were, mind you it was still in the water.   A guy was laying on it and sleeping on it while it was bobbing up and down.  ????  Yeah.  So when I find my cord I'll post it.

Their were so many people in the park is was unbelievable!   Their were cars park all over the place.  And dog, kids, and all that jazz.   So going fast was like very slow.  I have no desire to crash into a toddler or dog.

RECOVERING

It beautiful today and I'm not bike riding.   Well I got to give my system a break, I've been in bed for two day with horrible stomach pain.   I love coconut soup and I think this time my system could not handle the richness of the soup. Note my hubby had no ill effects from the soup, just me.  My mistake was I went to long with out having it.    The old story if you don't keep your body use to it you lose it.  Well I lost it and I'm going to get ride of all the coconut milk.   Now if our thinking to your self, maybe the milk was expired.  Nope, maybe the chicken was expired, nope.  I'm am super picky and very aware of what I'm eating at all times.   My hubby calls me a hawk.   And the soup cooked for a hour and a half so everything was fully cooked.    I can still eat shredded coconut, that ok.
Oh well life goes on.   Feeling so much better today, but I would be a idot to get on the bike.  I need to let my system recover.

Now that I am older the majority of the time I have it under control.   Not so much yesterday. :(

When I was dating my hubby one time we were walking down town and I had a attack down stair's, now take into mind, just because I'm in the restroom does no mean I'm using it).  Well I freak out and with out a word ditch him.  I didn't have a change to explain, nor did I want to ryth in pain in font of him.  So I found the nearest restroom for shelter.   This was a really bad episode that lasted 25 minutes.   The whole time I was like he's gone, he's gone...he's not going to wait.   After I pulled my self together.  I was totally in shock he waited and didn't take off.

Now this is were the cycling come in so handy, it really help out my system and my legs and well everything.   Cycling is life.  :)     But so far it has not helped my spelling and grammar.  :/

Lot's of water. Lot's and Lot's of water.

So yeah if the water is this high here, no wonder they had the rest of the park blocked off.

Same picture above and below.
I think he's recording the water flow.
It was not this far up last time.  Yikes

Oh and some thing I noticed look were the leaf line is. YIKES!   See the fence above that is the bike path, so it was a lot higher.    Double Yikes.

It been raining more toward evening and later, so if it keep raining, it might get back this high again.     Not look forward to the muck left on the path. :(

8.6 miles Airen (Brutial Windy Ride).

It was a brutal windy ride today.   Yeah only 8.6 miles in 45:00.    Breaking records today. LOL

The weather forecast today:
63 degrees.   Not cold at all
Cloudy; breezy with a touch of rain; watch for flooding.   Yeah you could say their was flooding.
Yeah I forgot my camera,  however later today I going to drive back up their and take pictures.
This is nothing the water came all the way to the raised bike path that skirts the edge of the park.
See the fence behind Chris head that the raised bike path.  The water is lapping all the way to their, no not that deep.

The wind was really whipping the bikes around.   A gust would come up and both Chris and I would start to get pushed off the bike path.  We decided not to ride thought the park, due to large parts of the road being covered in water, as well as a park sign posted flooding and high wind advisory.   With all that water more and more trees will be falling.

On our way out we had to get off our bikes and walk over a couple of small trees blocking that path.    But it was not raining.  ;)

2,018.88 miles total

So basically we've bike to Chicago which is.  (2,074.8 mi).  We'd have to ride another 55.99 miles to make it there. ;)      It's fun keeping track of every thing.

21.8 miles Airen & 12.2 miles

Well their must have been some sort of event going on because there were cyclist all over the place.  Lot's of cyclist.   The only other thing I could think of is everyone is getting ready for the Wildflower.

So hubby and I geared up and headed out.   It was not really cold, but it was overcast and very dark.   Hubby did the 12.2 miles, and had to go home to study.  I stayed out just a bit more to do another loop.     At the end of my ride about 1 1/2 from home it started to rain, I was like oh crap, but I lucked out it didn't down pour until I was already home for about a half hour.   It really started to come down.   LOL      In the weather report it's was suppose to rain all this week.  But it's only been really raining toward evening.

I'm still scratching my head on the Cadence.  I ride fast it's 62 and 110.  I ride really slow 8 to 10 mph and it still 62 and 110.   ????    Maybe I'm half alive and half dead.

Hmmmm   I should be able to do 109 miles in 5 hours.    Sound so easy to say it.  But it's not.   I can get to 50 and 60, I need to   ( hubby shaking his head at me right now).  Well at least I can try.
I want to do my first 100 miles not on a flat road, but the up and down thought the park.    This route make it harder.    When I did my first 71 miles, going up the two very small hills turn into my own personal Tour De Pain.  The 100 miles  will happen when it happens.

Yeah 21. 8 miles equals 128 calories burn.  LOL     1280 sound about right.

11.03 Miles. Airen

It was raining off and on all day to day and I wanted to get at least one small ride in before I go to the  Dentist.  I live their if your wondering.  So I doubled up on the clothing, put my warm ear protection on and zipped off to the bike shop.  Very overcast, but not that cold.   Had my bike check out, due to some strange noise the front brakes were making, turned out to be nothing to worry about.  Then headed back out to a very light mist. I can deal with a light missed.   Down Pour.......hissss hisssss.    The two things I hate about down pours is I can't see were I'm going, because I wear glasses and the road become slick.   Speaking of slick as of today I saw a man on a bike wipe out because he was going to fast on his bike and when he hit the breaks he slid along right in front of traffic.    YIKES!    He really luck out because their was no cars there when he fell.  And he doubly luck out because he slid with the bike, meaning he didn't tumble off the bike.   So as soon as the bike stop he popped back up and took off.  The rain brings all the oil to the surface and weather your driving a car or bike you got to be extra careful.

I felt all alone in the park, hardly anyone was in the park and their were no bikes either.  And the creek is on the rise again.  It's was lapping the edge of the path.   So if we get another good wind storm, more trees are going down.

I'm very proud to announce that my mother in-law is killing it with her bike riding.  Go Christine ;)  She so far done 3.3 miles and in the bad weather too.   YAY!!!

MY TIP'S FOR TRAINING BY YOUR SELF

Who knew that in 2013 my hubby and I would turn to the Cycling side.  It's been a wild 3 years of self discovery and great adventures.

I'm been heeing and hawing over joining a cycling club, it's not too terribly expensive $10.00 a year.  But so far the best trainer I've had is my self.

Concerning Phones:

I carry a phone on me to check the time and in case of an emergency's, that's it.  It is not connected to the web, so when I break I don't get distracted.  I see so many people in the park looking down it crazy.   I do feel if you want to have a good work out, put it down and away.   If you mind is distracted, your not focusing at the task at hand.

Concerning the route:

Try to go four a route that is away from traffic or has very little traffic.  You want to become very familiar with your route, down to the pot holes you might run into.   Why?  Because familiar is going to keep you safe and your going to know what to expect.  If I break down, I can easily walk home from, their is also two places I can buy cliff bars and what not (if I need it).
If I decided to take a different route each time, I would be putting my self at risk.  If I break down, how far would I have to walk, home?  Is my phones going to be able to connect.     Case in point, When we bike to Paradise being in the hills causes our phones signal to go dead.    So if I'm out in the boon docks and have a dead signal I'm up a hill with out a boat.  Another thing that is very important is if your going out by your self always tell a friend or family member what you are doing, were your going and how long you are going to be gone.  So if you don't return in a timely manner, someone will come looking for you.     Falling off your bike sucks and if you are unable to call or get help that double sucks.  At least you will know that if you have told somebody what area you will be in, your sore and in pain, but at least you know someone will be looking for you.

So make sure your route has:
  • Areas with access to water
  • Access to a store or stores.  If your phone dies, you'll be some were where their is at least a phone.
  • Is close to your home.  If your going to walk, walking 4 miles is better than walking 10 miles.  4 to 3 miles is my limit, after that I have to call for back up.  This is just in case. But other wise call for help.
Once you find your ideal area to ride in,  you won't feel like a fish out of water if your bike breaks down or your phone falls out of your hand and hits the pavement.

When I ride by my self I only carry 2 water bottles, 3 to 4 cliff bars, $5.00, phone and camera.  That's it.   Now if I were to do a group cycling ride in the future I would carry more, but by my self I want to go light.    As for equipment for repairs, I been really lucky, I have had only one flat in one full year, and this is because I'm sticking to the same route.

MY TIPS ON BEING YOUR OWN TRAINER:

Well first of all you save $$$$.   Cycling trainers are not cheep. $300 to $400 a month.
You should be pushing your self and motivating your self.
This goes hand in hand with weight loss, let me explain.   If you need someone to coach you in weight loss and stick to the plan, you'll do good as long as said person is helping you.  But take the person away and most people not only stop all the healthy tips, but gain the weight back double if not triple.

With cycling & losing weight you got to be the driving force in your goals, because if you are the create of your own momentum. You are the one that has to keep you pushing forward and the more you push forward the better you do.   Exercise and weight loss go hand in hand, it's really impossible to not talk about one with out talking about the other, but for now I'm going to stick to the cycling part.

  •  I ride two day's then break.   However if I'm feeling really good I ride three days and break.  I let my legs decide.   If they talk to me and are antsy I ride, if their dead and silent I don't ride. I listen to my body.  If I hurt my self I won't be riding.  Smart riding is better than no riding.
  • I have areas though the park that are my cool down areas and other areas were I push my self.
  • When I ride fast, I have a mental picture of a faster rider behind me just out of sight and my mental projection is I can't let him/her pass me.
  • I drive other cyclist batty.  Yes I will use other cyclist as a challenge, but only if they do not want to be past.    If I sense that they don't want me to pass them, I will use that as a moment to test my endurance on going fast.   What can I say it's fun.
  • Toward the end of the ride I do 0.5 or 1 minute of hard core sprint.  Out of breath sprint.  Heaving sprint.
  • I practice hill climbing in 2 to 6 reps.  Depending how I feel. This is a very steep grade.
  • I push my self harder going up grades than I do going down grades.
  • Drink lot's and lot's of water.
  • I eat 1/2 of a cliff bar every hour.
  • I stand up on the bike and stretch.
  •
Cycling is all mental, your mind will give out before your body does.   The trick is to train your self to recognize and over come what your brain is telling you.  Your body will let you know when enough is enough, were as your brain will tell you right away, nooooo.   Control your brain, control your ride.
And on to the next ride.  :)

15.3 miles & 1.1 miles

Bikes with my mother in-law Christine today.  :)   Here she is doing her sassy bike pose.
We did 1.1 miles and that is nothing to scoff at.  Every one has their own pace and speed.  I reset my speedometer and let her take the lead, so we could figure out how far she is riding and how many calories she is burning.   She burned 110 calories.   :)

This is my third day of bike riding so I really need to take a break.   But I decided not to go to the Alps.  ;)

This is one of the bike path that goes though a river bed.  However the water was not the problem.  See the debris line?   Here is what is look like close up.
Can't ride over this,  so I had to walk the bike over.   So wait?   Am  I know doing cycle cross?     LOL
Looking back up the path.   That's all rocks and debris.   I have a rode bike, so yeah I walked over that too.
